But when we brought Wilson home, she let him think he was the alpha for the first two weeks we had him. Once he seemed to loosen up, then she was back to being top dog. I always thought it was so cool that she did that. Now Wilson is the top dog over Cooper, but sometimes Cooper will try to test him. he walk right beside my leg, but if there is someone i front of us that is coming to fast or there is some thing he does not like, he will go in front of me til the person has passed us (we never learned him this) My Samantha was the alpha at our house, every dog we had and that came to our house listened to her. She was a solid black Shepard/lab mix. Smartest, best behaved and lovable furbaby we ever had. She would correct the other dogs and they always waited for her to sniff them before even trying to sniff her. Miss her terribly. Passed away a year ago at 12 years old. No one has taken her place as alpha. My dogs have always had this strange system. The oldest dog would be “alpha” they just are the one in charge. Once the oldest dies the second oldest takes over. The next one in line also has this kind of “beta role” This is the order that I can remember. Cosmo (our Akita) was alpha dog from the time I was 8 until he died when I was about 16.  My labrador Cocoa became alpha after that, she had this grandmother feel to her unless someone crossed her and it would take one grumble for them to back off, then when Cocoa passed away Suzy (our pitbull) became alpha and she still is to this day. She’s become a grumpy old lady lately but she’s a great dog. I had sibling brothers. My brindle boxer was definitely the Alpha of the two but I was the pack leader. I always feed the brindle before the white to keep the peace and the white was happy not being boss. I have 10 dogs and you are so wrong . They are a pack family . My male poodle and his daughter are the dominant pair ( Miniture Poodles ) All the rest are small and 1 very big American staffy. He is the protector not the Alfa They are a family and all look out for one another.
