Cautious by nature, I’ve never been much of a daredevil; the few times I tried skiing, I ended up having way more fun on the bunny hill than wedging my way down the mountain. It didn’t even occur to me to try surfing until 10 years ago when I was in my mid-40s and still rebuilding my life after a divorce. My only exposure to it had been from watching athletes sliding down gigantic wave faces on Wide World of Sports, their bodies like specks, the waves more like mountains than water. I couldn’t fathom why anyone would want even to try something that looked so dangerous, deadly, even. I thought they were out of their minds. But, on a reporting assignment in Montauk, a surf town at the eastern tip of Long Island, I came across something entirely different: indigo water that looked like sequined fabric gathering itself into smooth, rolling humps no more than knee-high. And the surfers! Powerful, graceful figures who seemed so at ease as they danced up and down the decks of their longboards. I was dumbstruck: Here was something that looked mellow and inviting, and something I thought maybe I could do.Most surfers tend to dream about big waves, ones whose peaks hover near the head or higher, whose reach can be expressed in terms of building stories. Those are the waves surfers build their travel plans or even lives around, becoming amateur weather forecasters to determine where the best swell will next arrive. I was hooked from the first time I tried it – that cosmic feeling of tapping into a force of the universe to fly across the water – even though I was terrible. Over a few years that included frequent lessons, rigorous physical training and moving from a Brooklyn walk-up to a tiny 1913 bungalow by the beach, I managed to claw my way to a basic mediocrity – able to catch and ride more waves than not in any given session, but by no means anywhere near those longboarders who’d first lodged in my imagination. 6 Easy Step To Grab This Celebrity rabies awareness fun run race for the cure shirt, hoodie, tank top, sweater, long sleeve tee: Click the button “Buy this shirt” Choose your style: men, women, toddlers, … Pic Any color you like!
